So many neighbors lost so much that the process of trying to get their lives back is unbelievably long and heart-wrenching. Social media stepped up and helped with so many things such as organizing to passing along information and requests for aid. We’re stepping up once again.

Here’s a brief quote from her post:

Social Media has already done so much for our state’s disaster relief recovery – it has been amazing to see our community step up and make a historical difference in the relief process. I am proud to say that Alabama will be a model for how to handle disasters going forward, especially with regard to how to maximize the value of Twitter, Facebook, and blogging in the wake of tragedy. Read more…

Made my first trip to Pepper Place Market this morning and was blown away by what all I saw and heard. Yeah, I know I’m late to the party but better late then never, right? Right! What I heard as soon as I entered the market was this beautiful voice singing an old Otis Redding song called ‘Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay’. She did it justice with only a guitar to accompany her and she was playing it!

As I walked around and looked at the various venues set up, I was amazed by all the creative arts and crafts on display, the fine produce being offered and the smells that wafted through the air. It was a virtual smorgasbord of many wonderful things to both amaze and tempt your inner soul. I could have stayed all day but alas, it closes at noon.

I dropped in at the Red Cat Coffee House for a strawberry/banana smoothie to cool off with and it did the trick. A lot of folks were buying smoothies and iced coffee to help cope with the heat. It wasn’t that hot but in the mid 80′s, it sure felt like it so cool refreshments under some shade trees were the ticket.

When my wife arrived, we stopped at Alison Lewis‘s table to see her and sample some tasty pimento-cheese that Bob Carlton (of Birmingham News fame) created. He calls it his ‘Soon To Be Famous Pimento Cheese’. The stuff is delicious Bob! I’m having some as I type this (which is probably why it’s taking me so long) and it’s good. Alison was there selling and signing her new cookbook, 400 Best Sandwiches that I missed picking up. My bad luck.

After we had walked around and looked at as much as we could, we bought some Rosemary for my wife and a bag of peanuts from the nice folks at the Peanut Depot table before deciding it was time for lunch. Seeing as Cantina was right there and we both love their Cuban Sandwich, it was a no-brainer.

Needless to say, we thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Pepper Place Market and seeing all that it had to offer. If you think Birmingham doesn’t have much going on, you really need to get out and see for yourself what all you’re missing.

If you’d like to catch up on what Alison Lewis and/or Bob Carlton are saying on Twitter, click the links on their names to visit their Twitter pages.

Remember to put Pepper Place Market on your to-do list. You’ll be glad you did. You just might catch ‘Peanut’ there, singing and playing her guitar. That in itself made my morning. If you need me, I’ll be ‘Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay‘ just hangin’ out. Come on down and join me!
